This artwork features an oil landscape painting by French painter Emile Gerard. The artist used warm colours, overlapping layers of light, and dark oranges with black and white touch sketching tall plants growing in a semi-abstract desert land.
Born in 1932, Émile Gérard was largely inspired by the 1950s growing up. Abstract Expressionism prevailed in the 1950s as a primary method of painting and explored ideas concerning the sublime and spirituality. Artists endeavoured to focus on painting’s formal properties, and Action Painting took inspiration from the political freedoms of the United States in opposition to the limitations of the Soviet bloc.
